Sorting of products is a very difficult industrial process. Continuous manual sorting creates consistency issues. The purpose of the color sorter is to design and implement a system which automatically separates products based on their color.

As consumers continue to become more and more demanding of product quality, there is a thrust toward improving sort performance to discover ever smaller and subtler defects. Color sensor systems are increasingly being used in automated applications to detect automation errors and monitor quality at the speed of production line.

Color Sorting Solutions

Color sorters used in assembly lines to identify and classify products by color. The objectives of their usage include to check the quality of products, facilitate sorting and packaging, assess the equality of products in storage and to monitor waste products.
Color sorters separate items by their colors, detecting the color of things that pass before them, and using mechanical or pneumatic ejection devices to divert items whose color do not fall within the acceptable range or which are desired to form a separate group from the rest.

Color Sorters in Grain industry
Color sorters are mostly used in sorting grain (agricultural products). The rice sorting industry is the first big market, the rice sorting technology is according to the color differences of rice (husked paddy) materials, using a high-resolution CCD optical sensor to separate different stones, black rice, etc. It is the final step after polishing rice with a rice polisher. The second sorting market is in use for coarse cereals, such as wheat, corn, peanut, different kinds of beans, sesame seeds, etc. Sorting machines improve product quality and add social benefits.

Color Sorters in Food industry

Color sorters are used for food processing industry, such as coffee, nuts, and oil crops. The goal is the separation of items that are discoloured, toxic (such as ergot), not as ripe as required, or still with hull after dehulling such as sunflower seed. Compared with manual sorting color sorting machines saving labor and time, with higher high efficiency, and lower processing costs. Throughputs have increased with the use of new CCD technologies and are now up to 100 t/h.

Color Sorting Machine Types

Sorters can be chute-type or belt-type. Belt-type machines break a smaller percentage of material (important for nuts) and the product stays relatively static during the transport process as it moves horizontally on the belt. Whereas in the chute type, material slides on the chute because of gravity, causing collision, friction, and larger vertical movements, thus worsening the ratio of broken material. The belt structure makes the transmission smooth and stable without bouncing of material.

Chute type is more common especially for food, as prices are lower, capacities are higher and products can be seen more easily from both sides, which is important when a de hulled grain has hull only at one side. Chute sorters are usually applicable to specific products as the chute is designed with special channels for this kind of material based on sizes and shapes of the material, for example 5 mm chutes are used for rice, grain and plastic granules. Flat chutes are right for plastic flakes, such as PET, or milk bottle flakes.

Rice color sorting machine

A rice color sorting machine, also named rice color sorter, separates rice grains according to color differences in raw rice arising from anomalies like bits of stone, bad rice, black rice, half-husked rice, etc. A high-resolution CCD optical sensor drives a mechanical sorter to separate different granular materials, automatically sorting heterochromatic particles out of the batch of raw rice; removing such impurities in this process improves the quality of the rice.

Rice processing begins in a milling plant, where the harvested grains run through a production line where the rice is boiled, dried, de-stoned, husked, hulled and shelled. It then is taken to the color sorter machine.
At this point, the rice mixture will travel by elevator belt into a hopper on top of the machine, from which it will flow down along chutes in the colour sorter, streamlining their flow to so that they may be scanned by CCD sensors.
The moment the camera detects any color defects, the camera instructs ejectors fitted in the machine to open the nozzle. The nozzle is connected to valves containing compressed air.
This air is then used to shoot out the color defected material from the input rice. The types of defects in rice include black tipped, chalky, yellow, mouse droppings, immature grain, etc.

How does rice color sorter machine works?
At present, there are two types of rice color sorter machine in the market:
• Optical type
• CCD type
No matter which type is it, the basic working principle is the color difference between good rice and bad(unwanted) rice. First of all, the Color Sorter Machine should translate the photo signal to electronic signal by photo-sensor and other complex element.
Then due to there is difference between good materials and bad materials, so corresponding there is also a difference good materials’ electronic current; And we can adjust some degree electronic current is ”safe” (good materials)and other is ”dangerous”(bad or unwanted materials).
At last, when the electronic current is “safe”, there is nothing happens and rice will successfully fall down to the accepted outlet; but if the electronic current is “dangerous”, the ejector will be driven to blow away the bad or unwanted materials.
